Wired Network Troubleshooting

What Is It?

ITS diagnoses and resolves problems on the LU wired network at the wall jack, patch cord, docking station/NIC, and access‑switch port layers. Typical fixes include jack/port testing and reconfiguration, cabling replacement, VLAN/port settings, link‑speed/duplex issues, and coordination when a new jack or remediation is required. All work follows LU policy (no personal hubs/switches/routers; do not re‑patch closets).

Who Is Eligible to Use It?
  • Faculty & Staff (office, classroom, and research spaces)
  • Students (wired jacks in residence halls, labs, and study spaces)
  • Departments (shared spaces and specialized devices such as printers, thin clients, lab gear)

Use must comply with LU Acceptable Use and University rules (e.g., no “foreign devices” on the network).

How Do I Use It?

Include details so we can act on first touch:

  • Location: Building and room and the wall‑plate/jack label (e.g., “1‑1‑44”).
  • Your device: LU asset tag/serial, Windows/macOS, and whether you use a dock.
  • What you see: Exact error (e.g., “Unidentified network,” “No Internet”), and whether link lights are on.
  • Scope & timing: Only your device or multiple users? When did it start?
  • Recent changes: Office move, new dock/cable, furniture changes, or Facilities work in the space.

We’ll test the jack, check the switch port, verify VLAN and security posture, and repair or escalate as needed. If a new drop or wall‑plate repair is required, ITS will coordinate with the appropriate group and keep you updated.

Notes & Policies

All wired usage must comply with LU Acceptable Use; do not attach unmanaged switches/routers or other unapproved devices (“foreign devices”).

Users must follow University rules and handbooks regarding technology and facilities access.
